Q&A with Nikkia Joy
1. Where did your love of beauty originate?
I have honestly adored makeup and beauty for as long as I can remember – even as a young girl in primary school I had an obsession with collecting lip balms and lipsticks Mum never wanted us to wear makeup to school at such a young age but I would always sneakily apply a little mascara and gloss on the school bus! Dolly and Girlfriend magazines were always such a treat to me – I would spend hours reading the beauty articles and looking at pictures of makeup on different celebrities! Makeup can be so empowering and can give women such self confidence – it’s one of the things I love most about it!
2. Which facial feature do you think is the most appealing?
I’m definitely all about the eyes – the eyes are the windows to the soul! You can tell a lot about how a person feels through their eyes and I love to teach my followers simple tips & tricks on how to make their eyes appear brighter and larger.
3. What is your favourite make-up look for the eye?
Smokey eyes are my favourite makeup look – and have definitely become my go to. I love to create a really smokey eye using lots of warm tone browns with a pop of shimmer on the inner corner – it honestly looks so flattering on any face shape or colouring – my signature smokey eye is easily the most requested look from clients who come to me for professional makeup services. For those DIYers – just remember that blending is key! Layer small amounts of colour at a time and blend blend blend!.
4.What is your go-to make-up product for a fast day into night look?
A good quality kohl pencil – you can completely transform your eye look with this one product! You can smudge it through your lash line for definition, use it in the waterline to add darkness, or even blend it over the entire mobile lid for a quick wash of colour!
5. Please enlighten us on your thoughts about the future of make-up?
The thing that I really love about the current direction of the beauty industry is that it is becoming more and more popular to be different. For years women have shied away from really bold lip colours or dramatic eyeliner looks because it wasn’t considered “the norm” but now it’s these different and creative colours and looks that are being openly applauded and encouraged. Makeup is about being creative and expressing yourself – why not have fun with it and colour OUTSIDE the lines for once!?
6. Challenge: if you were only allowed two products to create a look what would you use?
Lipstick and a brown kohl eyeliner! I would use the lipstick on the lips and cheeks to add colour, and then the eyeliner to add definition to the eyes/lashes and also fill in the brows! I always love using makeup products for different purposes than they were originally intended – it’s a great way to save money too because your getting more bang for your buck!
7. Can you give our followers your secret success makeup tip?
Practice makes perfect! I always encourage people to practice whatever technique they are struggling with every night before going to bed. If your finding it particularly difficult to master the smokey eye, winged eyeliner or overdrawing your lips etc. then practice it every night for 10-15 minutes before going to bed – that way if you do mess it up you can just wipe it off and go to sleep and then try again the next night!
8. Any tips for achieving the perfect brow?
My biggest tip for achieving the perfect brow is to always use your elbow as an anchor point before filling in with product. Use a hard/flat surface to rest your elbow on and keep your elbow rested on this point throughout the entire process. It will prevent your hand from shaking and it also gives much more precise control over how much product you apply. I also always use small, short strokes to create natural looking brow hairs rather than attempting to fill in a large area at once. Always seal with a brow gel too – it will make the entire brow look neater and will seal it in place for the days wear!
9. If you could be any one of the Ancient Goddesses of Mythology… who would you be?
I would have to be Aphrodite! She was all about love, beauty and looking fabulous! I feel like this suits my personality down to a ‘T’ – although not too sure about the always being naked part – that would be rather unpleasant during our cold Australian winters! 😛
